Which area is better to stay? Union Square vs. Fisherman's wharf
Monday, April 20, 2009
Union Square offers a variety of hotels, cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, etc. If you travel in night, there is more activity at Union square with cable cars running until 1 am or so, the theatres letting out and bars open. Fisherman's Wharf gets quiet at night and there are not as many people on the streets around the hotels. Fisherman's Wharf is a place of vacation, for many travelers. It has novelty stores and many restaurants-Gumps, the Hooters, Rainforest Cafes etc. Fisherman's Wharf is San Francisco's connection to its rich maritime history.
You can see Maritime National Historical Park, S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien, one of the last of the Liberty ships of World War 2 is docked at Pier 45 for tours. A lot of people like the Wharf as a place to stay and a lot like Union Square. As long as you are in San Francisco, it's all good. For families traveling with young kids, Wharf is often a good choice. For people traveling as a couple or alone, Union Square is an ideal choice. Apart from these two popular locations, a third location Embarcadero, is worth staying as there is convenient public transit, and the Ferry building.
